This is the engraving published in 1791 of Richard Westall's picture 'A Ghost/L'Apparition' which was buplished in March 1791 by T. Simpson, St Pauls Churchyard, engraved by Schiavonetti. The previous blog shows what appears to be the original watercolour. This engraving is a reversed image.
I first saw Westall's engraving of "A Ghost" about twenty years ago at a book fair, along with what I believe to be its pendant, an engraving titled "The Mask", also engraved by Luigi Schiavonetti and first published in February 1790.
The image of the two children playing with a mask derives from a detail of Sir Joshua Reynolds' large portrait of the Marlborough Family (Blenheim Palace), which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1778. For more details about Reynolds' painting and engravings after it see David Mannings 'Sir Joshua Reynolds - A complete catalogue of his paintings' text volume pp425-6, Yale 2000.
