  1. For study only, not for publication.
This oil painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1802 no 429 and at the British Institution in 1814 no 30 measuring 5.2 x 4.3. It was also at Richard Westall's own exhibition in 1814 no 37 owned by RW, and also as a drawing no 88 owned by Charles Heath.
It's full title is 'Margaret of Anjou and her son, Edward Prince of Wales, near perishing from hunger and fatigue, in the forest to which they fled, after the Battle of Hexham.'
On April 1, 1814 'New Monthly' commented: "Undoubtedly, one of the best of this excellent artist's productions in oil."
Margaret of Anjou, daughter of King Rene, consort of Henry VI of England appears in Shakespeare's Henry VI as maid, wife & widow and reappears in Richard III. Shakespeare's history said to be inaccurate. Also in Scott's 'Anne of Geierstein' as a widow.
